The Urban Loggers Approach to Milling

Most tree services chip or landfill your trees. Urban Loggers LLC brings a portable sawmill to your property and mills felled logs into usable lumber — live-edge slabs, dimensional lumber, fireplace mantels, and custom beams. It's sustainable, beautiful, and turns a loss into an asset.

Sustainability in Action

Every year, millions of board-feet of high-quality hardwood are chipped, mulched, or landfilled because tree services don’t offer an alternative. Urban Loggers does. We believe a 100-year-old walnut deserves better than the chipper — and so do you.

Whether it’s a spectacular live-edge dining table, a custom mantel for your fireplace, or rough-sawn lumber for a barn project, we’ll work with you to get the cut that makes the most of your tree.

How the Process Works

  • We assess the log for quality and mill-ability during your tree removal
  • Our portable bandsaw mill is set up alongside the log
  • You choose the cuts — slabs, dimensional, beams, or mixed
  • Green lumber is stickered and stacked for air drying (or kiln-connected)
  • You keep the lumber — or we can arrange delivery and storage

Frequently Asked Questions

What species can you mill?

We mill virtually any hardwood or softwood — oak, maple, walnut, cherry, ash, elm, pine, and more. Walnut and cherry slabs are especially popular.

How long does milled lumber need to dry?

Green lumber needs 1 year of air drying per inch of thickness. We can kiln-dry smaller batches or connect you with local kiln services for faster results.

Can you mill a tree I already had removed?

Yes — if you have logs stored on your property, we can schedule a milling session. Logs should be kept shaded and off the ground to preserve quality.

Do I need a large property for portable milling?

We need enough space to set up the mill alongside the log — typically a 20×20 ft clear area is sufficient. We work in backyards, driveways, and rural lots.
